Education and the Visual Arts

The Fondation believes that the visual arts develop observation, thought, sensitivity, and critical thinking. They allow us to understand and transform the world through image, form, and materials. In education, as in life, they are essential to the development of sensitive, creative, and discerning citizens.

At the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

The Fondation de la Chenelière has been working with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts since 2010 through the Espace Michel de la Chenelière for Education and the Arts. Thanks to a significant donation from the Fondation the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts was able to acquire a very well-equipped space of over 30,000 square feet to host workshops that allow thousands of people each year to benefit from unique artistic activities: educational programs, community programs, family programs, art therapy, an art hive, and more.

True to its mission of acquiring and promoting the works of artists past and present, from here and abroad, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has made it its mission to attract the widest and most diverse audience possible by offering privileged access to the universal artistic heritage.

Founded in 1860, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts was one of the first museums in North America to assemble a truly encyclopaedic collection. Over its history, it has amassed a collection of nearly 40,000 works of art, spanning from antiquity to the present day. These collections now include paintings, sculptures, graphic works, photographs, and decorative arts.

With MU, Montreal’s Open-Air Museum

The Fondation de la Chenelière has chosen to support MU by providing annual financial assistance for its educational activities in numerous schools across Montreal, working with children and teenagers.
The Fondation also offers MU assistance; free of charge, in negotiating partnerships with property owners who make their walls available, the future canvases, for magnificent murals that radiate throughout Montreal’s boroughs and into the surrounding cities of the greater metropolitan area.
